I love the book of Proverbs because it has so much practical advice for every area of our lives that can help us live out our faith. Proverbs teaches us about God’s character, His work in our lives, and His blessings. It provides little tidbits of wisdom and much needed attitude adjustments that correct and teach us what is right.
Who is the wisest person you know? I’m sure that most of us would say our parents or grandparents. Do you consider yourself wise? That answer probably depends on the day and the circumstances.
Proverbs is primarily written by Solomon. As King, Solomon was well know for his wisdom. In 1 Kings 3:3-14, God appeared to him in a dream and offered whatever Solomon wished for. Surprisingly, he asked for wisdom to run the kingdom. What a wise request!! God granted Solomon’s wish and also gave him riches and honor, as well as a long life if Solomon was obedient. Our God is so gracious! He gave so much more than Solomon requested!
In Proverbs 1:7, Solomon recognized that wisdom starts with fear of the Lord. That includes respecting Him, honoring Him, knowing Him, worshipping Him, learning more about Him, and obeying Him. “The fear of the Lord” is repeated 14 times in the book of Proverbs. This indicates that Solomon believed it should be a priority in our lives. In fact, the entire book of Proverbs is built on this verse.
The God who personally created each of us deserves our respect and honor, but the second part of this verse says “fools despise wisdom”. In reality, there are many who reject God and prefer to rely on their own understanding.
Psalms 14:1 says, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There Is no God.’” Basically, Solomon is saying if we don’t know God, our knowledge is worthless. We spend a lot of time in our lives gaining knowledge from school, college, and even continuing to learn for our jobs, but the most important knowledge we will ever have is the fear of the Lord. It doesn’t matter how much we know if we don’t know God!
Are you spending regular time seeking a greater knowledge of God? I hope this 31 day study will encourage you to begin your day gaining knowledge from God’s word and praising Him.
What scripture stood out to you in chapter 1? I would love to hear your insights.
