Day 2: Proverbs 2
Have you ever lost something and searched high and low trying to find it? I once misplaced $100 and searched diligently all through my house, purse, and even my car. After thinking it was hopeless and going to bed, I remembered gathering all the trash for pickup the following morning and throwing away a stack of mail. Suddenly it occurred to me that the cash may have gotten mixed in with the mail. Needless to say, at 11:00pm I was at the end of our driveway in my pajamas with a flashlight digging through the dumpster. I committed to the search and eventually found my money.
In order for us to find the wisdom of God and gain an understanding of the fear of the Lord , we must seek it with an even greater determination of finding $100 we’ve lost. Proverbs 2:4-5 says, “If you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.”
Solomon is instructing his son on the value of the knowledge of God and understanding the fear of the Lord. In verses 1-4, Solomon describes specific ways we can seek wisdom.
- Verse 1 “accept” – CHOOSE TO RECEIVE
- Verse 1 “store my commands” – TREASURE
- Verse 2 “listen closely” – LEAN IN/COMMIT
- Verse 2 “direct your heart” – APPLY IT
- Verse 3 “call out” – ASK FOR UNDERSTANDING
- Verse 4 “seek” – SEARCH
Solomon is saying that we must have a willingness and a desire to know more. It takes effort on our part to gain wisdom. It doesn’t happen by accident or just attending church. We must dig in to learn it for ourselves from the Bible and then treasure His word in our hearts. Then and only then will you “understand the fear of the Lord” that Solomon speaks of in verse 5.
Are you being diligent to seek God’s wisdom on a daily basis? Do teach your children and grandchildren about the wisdom of God as Solomon did? If you commit to 10 minutes a day for the remainder of this month, you would be well on your way to forming a habit of seeking God’s wisdom from His word.
Remember the SOAK method is a great way to dig in to scripture.
- S – SCRIPTURE: Write a scripture from your reading that speaks to you.
- O – OBSERVATION: Write down observations (your own thoughts or commentary notes).
- A – APPLY: How does this apply to you personally? What is God saying to you?
- K – KNEEL: Kneel in prayer. Record your prayer in your journal.
It’s never too late to start! I’m so glad you’re here doing this study! What scripture spoke to you today?
