GPS for Life

A few years ago a friend loaned me a GPS (Global Positioning System) for a family trip. It was fantastic to have an electronic map displaying our location along with a friendly voice which told us exactly which direction and when to turn. If we missed a turn, the GPS would patiently say, “recalculating, recalculating” as it found a new route which still managed to lead to our destination. I was so excited to finally get my own GPS, and I fully believe that little gadget can get me anywhere I want or need to go. Even when I don’t follow directions carefully, it will guide me back to the right path.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a GPS for life? Something to guide us in the way our lives need to go and, even when we lose our way, can direct us back to the right path. Ronald Reagan once said, “Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.” God’s word is our personal GPS for life. Taking into consideration the basis of the Bible, GPS could stand for Guidance-Promises-Salvation.

Guidance – The Bible offers guidance in any situation. No matter what you are going through in life, God’s word can guide you through it. Psalms 25:5 says, “Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; I want for You all day long.”

Promises – The Bible is full of promises that cover a wide range of topics. Anger, comfort, death, fear, forgiveness, guilt, hope, loneliness, marriage, money, protection, worry, and many more. 2 Peter 1:4 says, “Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” The Bible Promise Book is helpful in finding promises quickly for various topics. We can count on the promises of God, and we can trust Him to keep those promises. Psalms 145:13 says, The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.”

Salvation – The most familiar scripture about salvation is John 3:16 which says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Whoever means that salvation is available to anyone who believes. Salvation is a gift that is freely given to all, but like any gift we must accept it before we can enjoy the benefits. Children get so excited about their birthdays. They wait in anticipation and want everyone to know about the gifts they receive. 1 Chronicles 16:23 says, “Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day.” Like a child, we need to get excited about the gift of salvation and tell others so they may also experience that gift.

Recently, I saw a man wreck his pickup because his GPS did not correctly display a highway which had been redirected ten years ago. Roads may change causing your GPS to be inaccurate and leading you astray at times, but the word of God never changes. The road of life will never change because the path has become worn. For centuries, people have referred to and depended on scripture for guidance, reassurance of God’s promises, and salvation. God continues to speak directly to us through the pages of the Bible. There is no better GPS than God’s word. No matter our circumstances, the Bible still speaks specifically to the problems we encounter today.
